Record number of student-athletes achieve academic distinction
ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University student-athletes raised the bar with a record number of 220 SCIAC All-Academic selections for the 2017-18 school year - the third-most in the conference. This year marks the first time in Chapman's six-year history in the SCIAC that more than 200 Panthers were included on the All-Academic teams.
In order to earn the All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have earned a varsity letter and achieved at least a cumulative 3.4 GPA as of the end of the school year. In total, 212 student-athletes achieved the high marks in the classroom with eight of them being recognized in two sports.
Of the 213 student-athletes recognized, five of them own a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Sixteen total student-athletes own a GPA above 3.9 and 56 are above a 3.8. The 220 total selections represent 43 percent of all varsity student-athletes at Chapman.
Ten of the 21 teams on campus placed over half of their respective rosters on the SCIAC All-Academic team while six of those teams placed 60 percent or more. The men's swimming & diving team led the department with 81 percent of its roster earning the academic distinction.
Every team had a GPA of 3.1 or better when the school year came to a close with the 511 Chapman student-athletes combining for a 3.34 department GPA.
