Bio

Alvarez was a three-sport star for the Panthers from 1958-60, lettering four years each in basketball, baseball and cross country and one year in track. Most notably Alvarez is known as a member of Chapman's 1959-60 men's basketball team which reached the NCAA championship and was national runner-up with a 24-6 record. One year earlier, Alvarez was part of Chapman's West Regional qualifying hoops team that won 23 games.He won the Welch Trophy in 1955-56 as the team's MVP.

He was also a pitcher and hitter on Chapman's baseball team, earning the Hertzog Trophy as the team's most valuable player in 1959 and even throwing a no-hitter. He posted a .383 career batting average, including a .428 mark during the '59 season.

Alvarez was the No. 2 runner on the cross country team his last three years and lettered in the 880 meters as a junior on the track team.
