Blakely was the Panthers' star third baseman during the 1975 and '76 campaigns in which they placed runner up at the West Regionals both seasons. He was named to the All-America team in '76 after Chapman won 34 games. A year earlier we was named to the West Coast All-Star team and was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 24th round, but did not sign. After returning to Chapman for his senior year, he was drafted again, this time by the Detroit Tigers in the 19th round.
