Lucas was drafted in the 19th round of the 1976 Major League Draft by the San Diego Padres and ascended to the Majors after four seasons in the minors. He made his Major League debut with the Padres in 1980, where he pitched for four seasons. He went on to pitch for the Montreal Expos and California Angels, earning a career ERA of 3.01 primarily as a relief pitcher and recorded 63 career saves.
