Chapman bats make noise in Game 1; quieted in Game 2

ORANGE, Calif. -  The Chapman University baseball team split its doubleheader against visiting University of Dallas at Hart Park on Saturday. The Panthers started strong, defeating Dallas 21-1 in the first game; but Chapman could not keep its momentum going and fell 4-3 in a tight second matchup against the Crusaders.

Game 1: Chapman 21, Dallas 1
The Panthers took an early lead with four runs in the first inning supported by a two-run triple from sophomore OF John Semel. Chapman added three more runs in the third and broke it open in the fourth with a huge 12-run inning which advanced the Panthers lead to 19-1. The Panthers batted through their lineup nearly twice in the fourth with eight consecutive runs before the second out. Semel, freshman DH Ben Owens, senior IF Patrick Ohail and senior IF Tristan Phillips each scored two runs apiece in the fourth.

Overall Chapman had 19 hits in the game. Sophomore IF Tyler Hadzinsky went 4-for-6 with two runs and four RBI. Both Semel and Hadzinsky were a home run shy of completing the cycle.

Sophomore RHP Jordan Sigman took the win, allowing four hits and just one run, to mark his team-leading ninth victory of the season.

Game 2: Dallas 4, Chapman 3
Chapman (25-14) appeared on its way to a doubleheader sweep with two early runs in the first inning. The Crusaders got to Chapman senior RHP Matt Irsfeld with a pair of runs in the fifth inning and took a 3-2 lead that it would not relinquish. Dallas (21-14-1) then added an insurance run in the sixth.

The Panthers rallied with a run in the seventh when junior OF Ryan Hall scored on a single by Owens to make it 4-3, but Chapman could not overcome the deficit. Owens went 2-for-2 with an RBI and reached base in all four plate appearances. Semel also added two more hits to go 5-for-8 in the doubleheader and raise his batting average to .439, reclaiming the team lead.

The Panthers and Crusaders will complete the three-game weekend series on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hart Park.
