Comeback bid falls short for Chapman in 9-6 loss

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University baseball team's late-inning rally fell short, as Cal State San Marcos pulled out a 9-6 victory on Friday afternoon at Hart Park.  The Panthers' offense could not cash in on multiple scoring opportunities, leaving the bases loaded twice while stranding 12 runners.

Holding a 4-1 lead, San Marcos (9-5-1) broke open the game with a three-run homer to left field by junior DH Kevin Silvett in what ended up being a four-run seventh inning. Down 8-1, the Panthers scored two in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single from senior C Joe Lehman and on a bases loaded walk by junior DH Adam Kordich

In the top of the eighth San Marcos got one run back pushing its lead to 9-3. Chapman (10-3) then rallied in the eighth inning with three runs, two coming on RBI sacrifice flies from senior CF Ryan Prechtl and Lehman, along with an RBI single by junior 2B Tyler Hadzinsky. Prechtl went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two walks while Lehman finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Down 9-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Chapman brought the tying runner to the plate with two outs but was unable to capitalize.

Senior OF Josh Miller chased Panthers' starter Jordan Sigman out of the game after just 2 1/3 innings when he homered to left field giving the Cougars a 3-1, third inning lead. Chapman now travels to San Marcos tomorrow at noon to complete the two-game series.
