Panthers turn back ninth inning rally by Wabash for 4-3 win

ORANGE, Calif. – Leading by three runs with three outs to go, the Chapman University baseball team withstood a ninth inning rally to defeat the Wabash College Little Giants 4-3 on Saturday night at Hart Park. After starting the season 1-4, Chapman has now reeled off seven-straight wins.

Wabash (2-3) managed just one hit through the first eight innings against Chapman starting pitcher Brian Rauh, but still had an opportunity to win the game in the ninth inning. Sophomore OF Montana Timmons led off the inning for Wabash with a triple to right field off of sophomore reliever Kyle Tachibana. With one out, senior IF Tanner Coggins plated Timmons with an RBI single narrowing Chapman's lead to 4-2. Rauh (4-0) had 11 strikeouts on the night while allowing one hit and one run in eight innings of work.

A throwing error by Chapman senior IF Bobby Evers put Wabash runners on second and third with one out in the ninth for senior C P.J. Tyson who singled through the right side. The single scored one runner to make the score 4-3, but because the single stayed in the infield, pinch runner Trey Fankhauser was thrown out at the plate by Chapman senior IF Tyler Hadzinsky to end the Wabash rally.

The Little Giants got their lone run of the game off Rauh in the first inning on an RBI groundout by junior IF John Holm to take a 1-0 lead. Chapman (8-4) evened the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning on a RBI single by senior C Adam Kordich which brought home Hadzinsky who led the inning off with a double. Kordich was 2-for-4 on the night.

In the fifth inning, sophomore IF Tyler Surnbrock led off with a triple off Wabash starter Andrew Swart and then came in to score on an RBI groundout by sophomore OF James Parr which game Chapman a 2-1 lead. Surnbrock gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead in the sixth with a run-scoring double. The sophomore finished 2-for-4 on the night with 2 RBI. In the eight the Panthers added their fourth run with an RBI single to right field by freshman IF Mark Saatzer.
