Baseball shut out by Kingsmen at home

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University baseball team opened up its three game series against No. 10-ranked and defending SCIAC conference champs Cal Lutheran University with a 5-0 loss on Friday afternoon.

Cal Lutheran scored first when SS Austin Kay singled to left field scoring RF Ramsey Abushahla. The Kingsmen then extended their lead 4-0 in the top of the third when 2B Max Price homered, followed by a double to right center by DH Collin Crowl who knocked in two more runs. Kay finished the game three-for-four with two RBI, including the fifth and final run for Cal Lutheran at the top of the eighth.

Cal Lutheran pitcher Scott Peters tossed a full game facing 30 batters and giving up just two hits and two walks while recording six strike outs.

Chapman senior pitcher Kevin Klaess recorded his first loss of the season throwing for a full eight innings while recording five strikeouts. Freshman Jonathan Hernandez closed the game for the Panthers recording one strike out.

Chapman junior SS John Wiehe and sophomore CF Joey Bernal recorded the only two hits for the Panther offense.

The Panthers (3-4 overall, 1-3 SCIAC) will travel to Thousand Oaks on Saturday for a doubleheader against Cal Lutheran (4-0 overall, 1-0 SCIAC) beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Sparky Anderson Field. Chapman will return home Saturday, March 7 for a doubleheader against Caltech, after opening up the three game series at Caltech on Friday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. in Pasadena, Calif.
