Love leads Chapman to split with Cal Lu

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team split a pair of games with Cal Lutheran University on Saturday dropping the three game series 1-2 at Hart Park. The Panthers opened the first game of the doubleheader with a 12-2 win, but ultimately fell short to the Kingsmen 11-1 in game two.

Game 1: Chapman 12, Cal Lutheran 2

The Panthers came out strong in Game one scoring seven runs in the first inning to take a 7-0 lead. The Kingsmen posted a run in the third and one in the fifth to chip at the Panthers lead 7-2. Chapman then scored three in the sixth and a pair in the eighth to secure the eight-inning victory 12-2.

Sophomore Jared Love was the spark for the Chapman offense hitting four-for-five in game one with a double, a two run home run in the seventh and three RBI. Junior Gavin Blodgett was three-for-five scoring two runs for the Panthers.

Senior Matt Molnar earned the win, improving to 3-0 on the season after tossing a full eight innings and giving up eight hits.  

Game 2: Cal Lutheran 11, Chapman 1

In game two the Panthers struggled on the offense collecting only six hits compared to the Kingsmen 18 hits. Cal Lutheran manufactured seven runs off of ten hits in the first two innings to take an early 7-1 lead in the second inning.

The Kingsmen added three runs in the fifth and one in the seventh to earn the mercy. Junior Marshall Pautsch secured the win for Cal Lu after tossing six innings and recording seven strike outs.

The Panthers scored their only run in the first inning when freshman Andrew Mendonca singled up the middle to score senior Greg Dillon. Dillion finished the game 2-for-3 for the Panthers.

Chapman will take a break from conference for a five-game home stand beginning with a doubleheader against Webster at noon on Saturday, March 5.
