Larkin and Alhanati go yard in 14-3 win over Stevens

ORANGE, Calif. – Sophomore Conner Larkin and senior Tim Alhanati hit three-run homers in the Chapman University baseball teams 14-3 win over visiting Stevens Institute on Tuesday afternoon at Hart Park.

Tied 0-0 in the third, the Panthers broke open the score with a five-run effort to take the lead 5-0. Freshman Jarod Penniman scored first when senior Greg Dillon stole second base to put the Panthers up 1-0. Larkin then homered to left scoring three runs to push Chapman to 4-0. The Panthers scored their final run of the inning when freshman Andrew Mendonca singled to left to score sophomore Jared Love.

The Panther offense got hot again in the fifth scoring four runs off of five hits to extend their lead over Stevens to 9-0. The Ducks battled to prevent the shutout in the fifth inning, scoring a run on a triple down the right field line by senior Nick Sieber.

Leading 9-1 to the sixth, the Panthers tacked on two more runs on another single to left by Mendonca. Stevens rallied again to score a pair of runs in the eighth and tighten the score 9-3, but a three-run shot by Alhanati kept the Panthers at a comfortable 12-3 lead to preserve the win.

The Panthers racked up 15 hits on the day while giving up just seven. Chapman freshman Tyler Peck earned his first win, giving up just one hit in three innings on the mound. Sophomore Konnor Zickefoose continued to lead Chapman at the plate with a 3-for-5 day.

Chapman will return to conference play on Friday, March 25 for a SCIAC contest against Caltech beginning at 3 p.m. at Hart Park.
