Two Blodgett blasts lead baseball to sweep of Redlands

ORANGE, Calif. – Four homers flew out of Hart Park as the Chapman University baseball team completed a series sweep of Redlands with an 8-2 win on Tuesday. Sophomore Matt Mogollon settled in for an effective seven-inning outing top pick up his first win of the year.

Junior Gavin Blodgett sent two of those four homers beyond the fence in left field with both driving in a pair of runs. The Panthers were trailing 1-0 until the fifth when Blodgett, who had Sunday's game-winning hit, smacked a no-doubt, two-run shot to left to give Chapman the 2-1 lead. He later padded Chapman's lead with another two-run shot in the eighth.

Junior Jared Love smashed a three-run homer to cap a four-run seventh that extended the Panthers lead to 6-1. Senior Tyler Cook preceded the big fly with an RBI-single to make it 3-1 Chapman.

Redlands did the first damage on the scoreboard when Redlands' Brendan Moore hit a solo homer to get things started in the first. Mogollon settled in from there, allowing just one runner passed second base and striking out five in his seven innings. Sophomore Mason Collins tossed a perfect eighth and sophomore Jonathan Hernandez closed out the ninth to complete the victory.

Senior John Wiehe stayed hot at the plate and reached first in all five of his plate appearances. He was walked, hit by a pitch and singled three times.

The Panthers swept Redlands for the second year in a row and were one of just two teams in the SCIAC to start the conference season 3-0. Chapman travels to Pomona-Pitzer for a SCIAC game on Friday and returns home for a doubleheader with the Sagehens on Saturday at 11 a.m.
