Chapman earns series sweep over Sagehens

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team extended its winning streak to eight on Saturday after earning the series sweep over the Sagehens at Hart Park. The Panthers defeated Pomona-Pitzer 12-1 in game one and rallied to a 9-7 victory in game two.

Game 1: Chapman 12, Pomona-Pitzer 1

Senior John Wiehe put the Panthers on the board first scoring on a pass ball to give Chapman a 1-0 lead. Chapman went on to score six more runs in the second and two in the third to edge the Sagehens 9-0 heading into the fourth inning. The Panthers posted three more runs and allowed just one in the ninth to earn the second win of the series.

Five Panthers recorded doubles, including junior Gavin Blodgett who cleared the bases on a three-run double down the left field line in the third. Junior Jared Love went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI as well.

On the mound, senior Ben Vietze improved to 2-0 on the season after tossing a complete six innings and giving up just two hits and no runs.

Game 2: Chapman 9, Pomona-Pitzer 7

Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth, Chapman strung together three hits and a walk to score three runs and the come-from-behind 9-7 victory. Blodgett singled up the middle with bases loaded to tie the game 7-7 and senior Tyler Cook followed up with a single to right center to score the winning run.

The Panthers had a 5-0 lead through the fifth but Pomona-Pitzer rallied scoring seven runs over the next two innings to take their first lead of the game 7-5 in the seventh.

Junior Justin Stream finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and Love knocked in another pair of runs for the Panthers. Sophomore Mason Collins (3-0) earned the victory after pitching the last two innings and giving up just one hit while striking out four hitters.

Up next, the Panthers look to extend their hot-streak on Tuesday night against Redlands. First pitch for Chapman and the Bulldogs will be tossed at 7 p.m. at Hart Park.
