Panthers rally from down 7-0 to win pair of games

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team hit their way to a pair of wins against Claremont this Saturday afternoon. Junior Justin Stream went yard in game one for his first career home run and grand slam. Head coach Scott Laverty also picked up his 100th career win in the Panthers' huge game two comeback.

Game 1: Chapman 6, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4

Stream drove in four runs off his grand slam in the fifth inning to give Chapman a 6-2 lead. The Stags scored two runs in the sixth but were not able to rally to overcome the junior's grand slam. Stream was joined by sophomore Jarod Penniman and senior Jared Love, who each recorded an RBI to drive in a pair of runs.

The Panthers were also led by junior Conner Larkin who went 3-for-3 and freshman Aaron Wong who went 2-for-2 with a run.

Game 2: Chapman 12, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7

The Panthers rallied hard to come back from a 7-0 deficit in game two of the doubleheader. The Stags scored six runs in the first inning, adding one more in the second for good measure. Pitchers Matt Mogollon and Jonathan Hernandez didn't give up, though, shutting out Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final seven innings of the game.

The Panthers' comeback started with a three-run homer from the rookie Wong in the fourth inning. Sophomore Christian Cosby added to the score, going yard in the sixth inning to drive in one more run.

Chapman took the lead in the seventh inning, scoring six runs. Larkin and junior Gavin Blodgett each had one RBI in the seventh, while Cosby and Penniman each drove in a pair of runs to help the Panthers' offensive push.

Chapman's game two victory gave head coach Scott Laverty his 100th career win at Chapman University. Coach Laverty has been with the program since 2013, recording three consecutive winning seasons since taking over as head coach.

The Panthers return home on Fri. April 21 to take on the University of La Verne in another SCIAC matchup.
