Baseball honored for academic work

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team was awarded the Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association for the first time in program history. The Panthers were one of over 200 college and high school teams to earn the distinction.

The ABCA required at least a 3.0 team GPA to be eligible for the award. Chapman owned a 3.25 cumulative team GPA at the end of the 2016-17 school year. The award was introduced by the ABCA last spring and the list of recipient programs grew by over 60 teams.

The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Ethics in Coaching Award.
