Mogollon pitches lights-out complete game in victory over Pomona-Pitzer

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team beat the visiting Pomona-Pitzer 8-0 this afternoon behind an outstanding effort from starting pitcher junior Matt Mogollon. The Panthers (6-2, 2-2 SCIAC) scored eight runs to hand the Sagehens (5-3, 0-1 SCIAC) their first loss in the SCIAC.

Mogollon pitched all nine innings, allowing just four hits while striking out six batters. The junior didn't allow a hit until the third inning and went 1-2-3 in the top of the first to get the ball rolling for Chapman.

The runs seemed to pour in in the bottom of the first for the Panthers. Junior Trevor Willits singled to first on his first trip to the plate, followed by a monster triple from senior Justin Stream that scored a run. Next up was junior Andrew Mendonca, who singled to the second baseman to score Stream. With Mendonca on second and senior Gavin Blodgett on first after a walk, senior Conner Larkin stepped up to the plate. Larkin doubled to left field, scoring both Mendonca and Blodgett and giving Capman a 4-0 lead.

After two scoreless innings, sophomore Aaron Wong doubled through the left side, scoring junior Jarod Penniman. Willits then singled through the right side, advancing to second on the throw and getting Wong to third. Stream stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Wong and giving the Panthers a 6-0 lead.

Chapman scored one more in each of the fifth and sixth innings, bringing the final score to 8-0.

Larkin had another big game after his grand slam against Castleton, going 3-for-4 with a big double that brought in two runners. Willits also went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, scoring one run. Penniman and Stream each went 2-for-3, with Stream tallying two RBIs and a run.

The Panthers head to Pomona-Pitzer to finish the series with a doubleheader against the Sagehens. They head back to Hart Park on Friday, March 2 at 6 p.m. to take on Concordia of Wisconsin.
