Mogollon pitches one-hit stunner against Occidental

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior pitcher Matt Mogollon showed once again why he is the ace for the Panthers (28-10, 13-9 SCIAC), pitching a one-hit complete-game shutout in their 5-0 senior day victory over Occidental (19-18, 11-11 SCIAC).

Mogollon pitched his second 11-strikeout game this season, allowing no runs and just one single in the top of the fifth. This was his third complete-game shutout of the season and he improved to an 8-2 overall record with a career-low 1.54 ERA.

Chapman struck hard and fast in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs to take an early lead. With the bases loaded and one out, senior Gavin Blodgett hit a single to right field, scoring junior Alex Tsuruda and sophomore Aaron Wong from second and third. Senior Justin Stream stepped up to the plate next and singled up the middle, scoring junior Tristan Kevitch from third base. After senior Conner Larkin singled up the middle to advance Stream to second, junior Jarod Penniman stepped up and singled to left center, scoring Stream.

A quick top of the second put the Panthers back on the attack. With sophomore Joe Jimenez on third, junior Tristan Kevitch stepped up and doubled to left field, scoring Jimenez and giving Chapman its final 5-0 lead in just the second inning.

The next seven innings were highlighted by outstanding pitching by both Mogollon and Occidental's senior pitcher Josh Cohen, in which the two right-handers each threw four no-hit innings.

Blodgett went 3-for-4 in his final home game with two RBIs. Stream and Kevitch followed suit, each going 2-for-4 with a couple of RBIs.

Today's win put the Panthers in sole control of third place in the SCIAC standings. They head to Occidental tomorrow at 11 a.m. to play the final two games of the series and fight for a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
