Baseball advances behind Peck's gem

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior Tyler Peck was unphased in the face of elimination in the SCIAC Tournament, leading the Chapman University baseball team to a 6-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer. The right-hander went the distance for a complete game shutout in the first elimination game of the championship tournament.

The Second Team All-SCIAC selection was nearly untouchable through nine innings. He struck out a career-high 14 Sagehens and allowed just three singles in the dominant outing. While the Panthers put up all their runs before the fifth inning, Peck retired 10 in a row between the third and the sixth. He struck out eight over the final four innings to preserve the shutout.

Senior Justin Stream put the Panthers up with an RBI-single in the first inning. That would be all they needed but Chapman scored four more in the fourth and another insurance run in the fifth.

Senior Conner Larkin stroked a pair of RBI-singles to lead the Panthers offense. Stream and fellow senior Gavin Blodgett also had a pair of hits with Blodgett smashing an RBI-double to spark the four-run rally in the fourth.

Chapman had nine hits but drew eight walks from five Sagehens pitchers.

The Panthers advance to this afternoon's second elimination game. Chapman will face the loser of the La Verne-Redlands game, following the conclusion of that game.
