Peck strikes out 10 in Panthers’ first loss of the season

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team dropped their home opener 3-0 to the visiting East Texas Baptist Tigers earlier this afternoon. Senior Tyler Peck recorded 10 strikeouts in his second start of the season.

It was a pitchers' duel through the fifth innings as neither pitcher allowed a single run to score. Peck tallied six of his strikeouts in the first five innings, allowing just two hits through the first four innings.

With two on and no outs in the top of the sixth, the Panthers felt the pressure. Tiger senior Seth Mikeska grounded out to short, moving the runners to second and third with one out. After a fly ball to short from the next batter, Peck threw a couple of wild pitches, allowing both runners to score and East Texas Baptist to take a 2-0 lead.

Peck came back out on the mound in the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to bring the Panthers back up to the plate. A strikeout and a couple of groundouts in the bottom of the seventh kept Chapman scoreless.

The Tigers added one more run in the top of the eighth when Mikeska doubled down the left field line to score senior Zach Gartner. Sophomore Riley Glenn finished out the game on the mound for the Panthers, allowing no hits and no runs scored.

Senior Jarod Penniman, junior Aaron Wong and freshmen Miguel Cebedo and Drew Littwin each tallied a single to account for Chapman's four hits.

The Panthers return to Hart Park tomorrow, Feb. 16 at 1pm to finish out the series with East Texas Baptist in a doubleheader.
