Baseball still in it after first double-elimination loss

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Chapman University Panthers fell to the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons 10-6 in the winner's bracket of the 2019 NCAA Division III World Series. Six different Panthers tallied at least one RBI in the effort.

Sophomore Henry Zeisler knocked in the first run for Chapman in the top of the first. With runners on first and second, Zeisler singled to center field to score one run and give the Panthers their first and only lead of the game.

The Beacons responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run to tie the game at 1-1. After a scoreless top of the second for Chapman, UMB put up a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.

The Panthers added one more run in the top of the third when junior Joe Jimenez singled through the left side to score senior Tristan Kevitch and cut Chapman's deficit to four runs. The Beacons fired back, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 9-2.

Freshman Brad Shimabuku and sophomore Mack Cheli each knocked in a couple of runs in the sixth and seventh innings respectively to make the score 9-4 heading into the eighth. The Panthers added two more runs in the top of the ninth but ultimately fell to the Beacons.

Cheli went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Shimabuku and Zeisler each tallied two hits, one RBI and one run scored.

Junior Mitchell Briggs threw two shut-down innings to keep the Panthers in the game in the sixth and seventh, allowing no hits while going 1-2-3 in both innings.

The Panthers take on Washington and Jefferson tomorrow, June 2, at 10 a.m. CT in a win-or-go-home game.
