Baseball back in SCIAC Tournament Championship game

ORANGE, Calif. – For the third year in a row, the Chapman University baseball team will be playing a SCIAC Tournament Championship. The Panthers advanced through the winner's bracket with a 5-2 win over Cal Lutheran on Friday.

Junior Brad Shimabuku led off the game with a single and found himself on base all five times he came to the plate to lead the Panthers in the 5-2 win. He finished 4-for-4 with a walk. His single sparked a two-run first as the Panthers led wire-to-wire.

Cal Lutheran's Mason Snodgrass cruised through the next three innings while the Kingsmen picked up a run in the third to make it a 2-1 ballgame. However, the Panthers picked up three more runs in the sixth. Junior Cooper Foard's double into the left field corner was misplayed, allowing Mack Cheli to come around to score from first.

Foard scored on Davis Mieliwocki's sacrifice fly and Kyle Joye came home when Shimabuku beat out an infield single.

Senior Riley Glenn worked around seven walks to hold Cal Lutheran to two runs on just four hits. He retired seven in a row for the third to the fifth and allowed just one hit after the third inning. He ended the sixth and seventh innings with double plays to erase a couple of walks.

Cal Lutheran finally cashed in a pair of walks to open the eighth inning with a run-scoring double from Bullard. The Panthers went to the bullpen and sophomore Wyatt Thompson retired all six batters he faced to close out the game.

Chapman will face the winner of the elimination game between La Verne and Cal Lutheran tomorrow at 11 a.m. with an "if necessary" game immediately following.
