Baseball swept by CMS in SCIAC-opening doubleheader

ORANGE, Calif. – The early season skid continued for the Chapman University baseball team as it fell in both games of a doubleheader, 5-0 and 6-2. AJ Anzai went 3-for-4 in the second game but the Panthers left 20 runners on base in the doubleheader.

Game 1 – L, 5-0

After starter Grant Manning pitched out of a jam in the top of the first inning, the Panthers loaded the bases with two outs in the first. A groundout ended the inning and the Panthers didn't reach third for the rest of the game.

Manning tossed seven struck innings, striking out six. He gave up two unearned runs in the fourth after an error extended the innings. The Stags followed the error with a run-scoring double and a bases loaded hit by pitch to take the 2-0 lead.

CMS added three insurance runs in the ninth. Jarrett Korson went the distance for the Stags, striking out eight and allowing four hits in the complete game shutout.

Game 2 – L, 6-2

After leaving eight runners on base in the first game, Chapman left 12 more on base in the night cap as the Panthers fell 6-2. Anzai returned to the lineup with three singles, including an RBI-single in the fifth.

Chapman's offense gained a bit of momentum with 13 hits but did only managed to push two runs across in the opening games of the SCIAC schedule. Anzai scored Clay Patton in the fifth and Davis Mieliwocki brought home Cole Minato with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Wyatt Thompson had a strong first inning but ran into trouble in the second, walking in three runs. CMS scored on more in the third on a slow roller with a runner on third. Max Banks finished out the game for Chapman, tossing six strong innings. He struck out six but CMS added two insurance runs in the eighth on a run-scoring single and an error.

The Panthers rescheduled series finale with CMS is set for tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. to be played on the campus of Caltech as CMS rebuilds its baseball facility.
