Chapman vs. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Game Notes
Last Week vs. Pomona-Pitzer
Chapman got its first win of 2010, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 41-17 at
Wilson Field. Down 10-7 at halftime, the Panthers scored three
touchdowns in the first eight minutes of the third quarter to take
control of the game. Junior RB Al White and senior
RB Akio Lloyd each had a pair of touchdowns for
the Panthers.
Chapman had gone 11 games in a row without scoring 30 points. So then it was a bit surprising when the Panthers put up 34 in the second half on Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer. Those 34 points in a half are a team record under head coach Bob Owens and the first time the Chapman offense has scored 40-plus points in a game since 2007.
A Game of Firsts vs. Pomona-Pitzer
As mentioned above, the win marked the Panthers' first of the
season but there were several other firsts as well. Senior S
Jake Fey got his first-career interception in the
first quarter. Also in the game, White, junior QB DeShawn
Wilkins and sophomore RB Chad Milburn
each had their first-career rushing TDs. In addition, Lloyd had his
first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Also, former starting QB
Blake Vanderwiel who is now playing linebacker had
his first-career sack.
Running Wild
Chapman rushed for 244 yards against Pomona-Pitzer while 10 players
got at least one carry. The last time Chapman had over 200 yards
rushing in a game was on Mike Christensen's record-setting
day against Whittier in 2008. Christensen ran for 262 of the
team's 263 rushing yards in the 35-21 win over the Whittier,
breaking Chapman's previous single-game rushing record by
four yards.
Lloyd Just Three Yards Short of 1,000 for
Career
Lloyd had 100 rushing yards against Pomona-Pitzer leaving him just
three yards short of 1,000 for his career. When Lloyd accomplishes
the feat, he will become just the sixth Chapman player to reach
1,000 career rushing yards. The last Chapman player to reach 1,000
career rushing yards was Christensen who had 1,001.
Senior DB's Jake Meyer and Jake Fey each had an interception against Pomona-Pitzer. You have to go back to Chapman's 21-7 season-opening win over Menlo College in 2009 to find the last game that Chapman had two interceptions in a game.
Adranly Maintains Top-10 Ranking
Junior P Jimmy Adranly punted four times last week - all good ones - and once again tied his career best with a 55-yarder. All four punts landed inside the opponents' 20-yard line for an average of 44.8 yards. Adranly boosted his season average to 42.8 yards per punt, currently ranking No. 10 in all of Division III.
Soccer Swap
When the Panthers and Stags kickoff at 7 p.m. in Claremont on
Saturday night, the Chapman men's soccer team will also be
kicking off at home against Bethesda Christian at the same time.
This is significant because three members of Chapman's
kicking unit also play soccer. So Owens and CU men's soccer
coach Eddie Carrillo made a deal: Adranly and backup K Nick
Echeverry go with football and starting K Mauricio
Alfonso stays with soccer. Echeverry and Alfonso are two
of Chapman's top three goal scorers for a Panther soccer team
fighting for a playoff berth.
Chapman vs. Claremont
The Panthers are 5-1 all-time against Claremont, including winning
the last three meetings in a row. Last year's matchup in
Orange, Chapman won 13-9, scoring all 13 points in the first
quarter. The Panthers' defense did the rest, limiting the
Stags to 80 passing yards and didn't allow a touchdown until
the fourth quarter. The last time the two teams met in Claremont,
the Panthers won 21-7.
Claremont in 2010
The Stags are averaging over 40 points per game in their first
three games this season and have already scored more points (122)
than they did in their first seven games combined in 2009 (114).
The 40.6 points per game ranks them 20th nationally in scoring
offense. The Stags rely primarily on their run game which is
averaging 231 yards per game, good enough for 22nd nationally.
Claremont's 3-0 start is its best since 2002 when the team
began the season 7-0.
Claremont in the National Rankings
Claremont is not only scoring points, they are keeping opponents
out of the endzone. The Stags' defense ranks No. 8 in
Division III in rush defense, allowing just 63.3 yards per game on
the ground. Claremont also ranks 18th and 16th in quarterback sacks
and tackles for loss, respectively. Sophomore DE Eric
Janicki leads the way with 1.3 sacks per game.
