Chapman Football Game Notes (10/23/10)
Poet-ic Irony
In 2009, in Chapman's homecoming game, Whitter pulled off a 21-6 win. Last Saturday Chapman returned the favor winning 29-17 in Whittier's homecoming game. Chapman never trailed as they built a 14-0 first-half lead on scores by senior WR Mike Lambesis and freshman QB Michael Lahey. With Chapman leading 17-7 in the third quarter, Whittier scored a field goal narrowing the score to 17-10 which was as close as they would get the remainder of the game.
A Win When Scoring First...And Another First
Chapman scored first in its first two games Menlo and Azusa Pacific only to end up losing. Against Whittier the Panthers got their first win of the season when scoring first and are now 1-2. Also the Panthers got their first safety since a 33-14 win over La Verne in 2008.
Lambesis Catching On
The junior wide receiver had another strong performance by catching eight balls for 89 yards and a touchdown against Whittier. Lambesis now has three touchdowns and 160 yards on 11 catches in the last two games. His previous three games: five catches for 29 yards and one touchdown. Lambesis is averaging 13.1 yards per reception.
Lahey Running With His Opportunity
Filling in for injured QB DeShawn Wilkins against Whittier, Lahey made the most of his first significant action of his career by running for 83 yards on 16 carries and touchdown against Whittier. He also was 3-for-3 passing for 32 yards.
Panthers Moving Up All-Time List
Chapman seniors Akio Lloyd and Chris Langstaff are moving their way up the Panthers' individual career records list. Langstaff who has 1,246 career receiving yards is 60 yards shy of becoming the second-leading receiver in Chapman history. Lloyd has 2, 190 all-purpose yards leaving him 91yards short of third place all-time. The senior running back is averaging 117 all-purpose yards per game this season.

Adranly Movin' on Up; Now No. 4 Nationally
Each week junior P Jimmy Adranly is slowly climbing up the national rankings as he currently is ranked No. 4 (up from No. 6) in Division III, averaging 43.48 yards per punt. Against Whittier he punted just twice but still raised his average as the punts averaged 51 yards. Adranly also placed both punts inside the opponents' 20.
Running and Rolling
The Panthers have had 100 yards or more rushing in each of the last four games. The last time that Chapman had four or more 100-yard running games in a row was in 2008 when they started the season with five consecutive 100-plus yard games. Chapman has totaled 716 rushing yards on the season while averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Of the team's 15 offensive touchdowns, eight have come on the ground. Chapman should be able to continue having success running the ball against a La Verne team which is giving up 150 yards per game on the ground.
Chapman vs. La Verne (A Rivalry Renewed)
Chapman is 7-9 all-time against La Verne. From 1994-2000, the Chapman-La Verne rivalry was one of the most competitive and exciting in all of Division III. Nearly every game came down to the last second, as six of the games were decided by three points or less and the seventh game was decided by four points, however Chapman only won two of those games. The tables have turned in the last 10 years as Chapman holds the edge winning 6-of-10 and four games in a row including last season's 17-14 win at La Verne.
Leopard Ties
Both head coach Bob Owens and quarterbacks coach Jason Reyes are La Verne alumni. Owens graduated in 1970 while Reyes graduated in 2004. Reyes was a quarterback for the Leopards from 2001-02.
La Verne in 2010
The Leopards are still in search of their first win of the season and have not won a game since defeating Whittier 24-21 on Nov. 1, 2008. With the exception of six-point loss to Claremont, the Leopards' average margin of defeat has been 32.5 points. The offense ranks 217th out of 236 teams in total offense at 237 yards per game. La Verne's ground attack is averaging just 58 yards per game, ranking it 230th. One bright spot has been the Leopards' defensive ability to get pressure in the backfield as they rank 32nd nationally with 7.6 tackles for loss per game.
