Chapman Football Game Notes (10/30/10)

Homecoming Excitement
It didn't appear there would be much drama for Chapman on Homecoming night as the Panthers jumped out to a 28-7 halftime lead over La Verne last Saturday. However, the 21-point cushion did not hold up as the Leopards fought their way back to tie the game at 28-28 in the fourth quarter. Chapman scored the game winning touchdown with just over 3 minutes on the clock to improve to 4-1 on Homecoming night under head coach Bob Owens.

Home Success
A win over Occidental in the Panthers' home finale on Saturday would give them their first winning record at Chapman Stadium since going 4-1 in 2007. Chapman was 2-3 in Orange last year and 2-2 in 2008.

Finding His Groove
Junior QB Bret Visciglia may have settled into his comfort zone as Chapman's starting playcaller. On Saturday, Visciglia had his best game in a Panther uniform completing 19 of 24 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns. Most of that came in the first half when he was 16 of 19 for 204 yards, which by itself would have been a career-high. Visciglia then looked poised in the fourth quarter of a tie game as he led Chapman on its game winning touchdown drive - traveling 52 yards in just 1:46. He needs just 171 yards to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark for the year.

Langstaff Cracks Top-100
Senior WR Chris Langstaff has broken into the national top-100 in two categories with his 10 reception, 133-yard effort last Saturday. Langstaff's 72 yards per game is 96th best in the nation. The senior also has averaged 5.5 receptions, which is 83rd out of all Division III wide receivers.

Lambesis Has Opponents Seeing Double
Junior WR Mike Lambesis has mirrored impressive performances the past two weeks. The junior wideout caught for 80+ yards and a touchdown for two straight Saturdays and was named Chapman's Athlete of the Week.

Lambesis's last two games:
vs. Whittier (10/16/10) 8 receptions, 89 yards, 1 TD
vs. La Verne (10/23/10) 7 receptions, 87 yards, 1 TD

Adranly Remains Top-5 in Punting
Junior P Jimmy Adranly continues to stay in the top-five nationally, averaging 43.2 yards per punt. The junior dropped one spot to No. 5 in the Division III rankings. Adranly punted just twice last week against La Verne with a long punt of 44 yards. As a team, Chapman ranks No. 14 in the nation in net punting.

Career Milestones
Senior RB Akio Lloyd racked up 112 all-purpose yards last week passing alumnus Harrison Dull for third place all-time on Chapman's career list with 2,302 total yards. Lloyd has a great opportunity to move into second place, needing just 34 yards to pass Darnell Morgan.

Defensive Leaders
Heading into the final three games of the season, the Panthers have a close race for who will lead the team in tackles in 2010. Currently, just one tackle separates sophomore linebackers Kellen Matsuno (48 tackles, 31 solo) and Erick Mueller (47 tackles, 24 solo). Senior FS Jon Loynes is right behind them (46 tackles, 31 solo) and senior SS Jake Fey is just four back of the leader, but leads the defense in solo tackles (44 tackles, 35 solo).

Running and Rolling
The Panthers have had 100 yards or more rushing in each of the last five games. The last time that Chapman had five or more 100-yard running games in a row was in 2008 when they started the season with five consecutive 100-plus yard games. Chapman has totaled 840 rushing yards on the season while averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Of the team's 20 offensive touchdowns, 11 have come on the ground.

Chapman vs. Occidental
Albeit one-sided, Chapman and Occidental have developed a pretty fierce rivalry in recent years. The Tigers have won five straight in the series, however each of the past three meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less including last year's 20-14 Oxy win in Eagle Rock. Occidental leads the all-time series 7-5 with Chapman's last win coming in 2004 with a 31-28 decision in the Panthers' home opener that year.

Occidental in 2010
The Tigers may not be the national power they were a few years ago, but they have put together another solid season in 2010 with hopes of adding another NCAA playoff notch to their belt. Occidental currently has the top-ranked passing offense in the SCIAC with over 231 yards in the air per game. Tigers quarterback Luke Collis has a passer's rating of 152.95 which leads the conference and ranks No. 32 in Division III. Oxy had its four-game winning streak snapped last week with a 51-7 thumping from SCIAC-rival Redlands.
