Chapman Football Game Notes (11/6/10)

First Win Over Oxy in Six Years
Chapman fell behind 6-0 on Occidental's first drive of the game and trailed 13-7 with 8:22 remaining in the second quarter. Then senior WR Chris Langstaff took over, scoring on an 85-yard punt return and an 84-yard reception to give Chapman the lead at 21-13. Occidental did retake the lead in the third quarter 24-21 after a field goal and a touchdown. Freshman WR Michael Lahey then led the Panthers on an eight-play, 80-yard drive at the end of the third quarter for what would be the game winning score. Chapman last beat Occidental in 2004, snapping a five-game losing streak. The Panthers are 6-7 vs. Occidental all-time.

Big on Third Down
Chapman has converted 42 percent of its third downs this season ranking the team 66th nationally. On two of the Panthers' three scoring drives on Saturday, the team converted crucial third downs which led to two touchdowns.

Defense Comes Up Big
The Panthers' defense came up big against Oxy forcing five punts, a turnover on downs and a fumble. The biggest stop of the game came late in the fourth quarter on a 4th-and-4 on Chapman's 9 yard line. Down 28-24, Oxy went for it on fourth down, attempting a screen pass only to be turned away as senior DB Jake Fey made the stop giving the ball back to Chapman. Freshman DB Anthony Ferraro led the team with a career-high 10 tackles, six solo.

A Broken Record
Maybe it sounds like a broken record but Langstaff has had an impressive two-game run, highlighted by his game against Occidental last week where he had 11 catches for 171 yards and a record-setting 85-yard punt return for a touchdown. The previous punt return record was 65 yards set back in 1995 by Oscar Ford. For his efforts against Oxy, Langstaff was named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week. Langstaff currently ranks 40th nationally in receptions per game (6.29) and 55th in receiving yards per game (86.14).

Passing Success vs. Oxy Over the Years
Chapman receivers have had 12 games all-time with over 150 yards receiving in a game and four of the top seven games have come against Occidental, including Langstaff's 171 yards on Saturday. Dan Delahoussaye is the last Chapman player to have over 150 yards receiving in a game and he also accomplished the feat against Occidental with 190 yards.

Adranly Remains Top-5 in Punting
Junior P Jimmy Adranly continues to stay in the top-five nationally, averaging 42.9 yards per punt, currently at the No. 5 spot in the Division III rankings. Adranly punted four times last week against Oxy with a long punt of 44 yards, pinning one punt inside the 10-yard line. As a team, Chapman ranks No. 12 in the nation in net punting, moving up two spots from last week.

Defensive Leaders
Heading into the final two games of the season, the Panthers have a close race for who will lead the team in tackles in 2010. Currently, just one tackle separates Fey (53 tackles, 42 solo) from junior LB Erick Mueller (52 tackles, 25 solo). Senior FS Jon Loynes is right behind them (50 tackles, 32 solo) and sophomore LB Kellen Matsuno (48 tackles, 31 solo) is just five off the pace.

Home Field Advantage
Chapman finished its 2010 home schedule with a 3-1 record marking the team's first winning record at Chapman Stadium since going 4-1 in 2007. Chapman was 2-3 in Orange last year and 2-2 in 2008. The Panthers are 42-35 all-time at home.

Running and Rolling
The Panthers have had 100 yards or more rushing in each of the last six games. Chapman had a streak of 29-consecutive 100-yard rushing games from 1994-1997. The Panthers had 146 yards on 33 carries against Oxy. Chapman has totaled 986 rushing yards on the season while averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Of the team's 24 offensive touchdowns, 13 have come on the ground. Chapman has used a variety of running backs this season due to injuries and each time a new player has stepped up. On Saturday freshman RB Ed Harris filled the role nicely with 95 yards rushing and a TD.

Chapman vs. Cal Lutheran
Cal Lutheran holds a 10-5 all-time edge in the series including wins in the last two games. Chapman last won 44-30 in 2007 at home. Last season Chapman lost 49-13 as Kingsmen running back Brian Stuart had 165 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Cal Lutheran in 2010
The Kingsmen are 6-1 and ranked No. 20 in both the D3football.com and AFCA Top-25 polls. Their lone loss came to Pacific Lutheran who is also ranked. The Kingsmen rely on a potent, but very balanced offense which averages 385 yards per game (217 passing ypg, 167 rushing ypg) and 35 points. Defensively, the Kingsmen like to apply some pressure led by senior DE Jordan Barta who is seventh in Division III with 8.5 sacks.
