Chapman Football Game Notes (9/22/12)

Setting the Bar High
Keeping in mind it's just one game, the Chapman offense set some lofty standards in its season-opening victory over Puget Sound. Three weeks into the Division III season, the Panthers rank No. 2 in the nation in total offense, scoring and sacks per game, while ranking No. 3 in kickoff returns.

Quick Out of the Gate
Just how impressive was the Panthers' 28-point first quarter in Week 1? Chapman's 28 points in the game's first 15 minutes was more than it scored in its first two games combined last year and more than it totaled in six of nine games in 2011.

Racking Up Yards, Err, Mileage
Chapman's 615 yards of total offense was the equivalent of nearly a half-mile of offense against Puget Sound. It was the fourth-highest offensive output in school history and the most since 1996 when the Panthers set a school record with 644. Here's how the top four offensive games compare in Chapman history:

Points on the Wilsontron
The 55-35 win over the Loggers was also the Panthers' fourth-highest scoring game in Ernie Chapman Stadium history and the eighth -highest in Chapman lore. Here are the top-5 high scoring games the Panthers have had at home:

Like an ol' Vet
Sophomore QB Kean Stancil looked anything but inexperienced in his first Chapman start under center. Stancil led the Panthers to three scoring drives in their first three possessions and connected on 19 of 20 pass attempts in the first half. He finished 26 of 32 for 336 yards, with two TD passes and two rushing TDs. He is the first CU playcaller to throw for over 300 yards in his debut and was named Chapman Athlete of the Week.

D3Football.com Team of the Week
After their impressive Week 1 performance, Chapman received some well-deserved recognition nationally. Junior KR Austin Maranville and the entire offensive line were named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week. Maranville set a school record with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the game's opening play while seniors D.J. Brandel and Andrew Gutierrez, sophomore Chris Collodel and juniors Justin LaLonde and Andrew Palacios helped Chapman rack up 615 yards of total offense and did not allow a sack.

Extra, Extra (Points)!
The Panthers' special teams are just five boots away from another school record. Chapman needs just five consecutive successful PATs to equal the school record of 54 in a row set from 2007-09. The current streak, which began in 2010, has been thanks primarily to senior PK Mauricio Alfonso who extended his school record in Week 1 by going 6-for-6 and is now 53-for-53 in his career.

Alfonso Equals Career Field Goal Mark
Alfonso's next field goal will establish a new bar for kickers in Chapman history as he will stand alone as the career leader. With a pair of field goals against Puget Sound (from 35 and 40 yards), Alfonso equaled the career mark of 18 set by Bill Hamlin from 1994-96.

Two-Sport Star Named SCIAC Athlete of the Week
Alfonso - also an All-Region forward on the Panthers' soccer team - was named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for Sept. 3-9. In addition to all of his accomplishments on the gridiron against Puget Sound, less than 12 hours later, Alfonso scored two goals including the game-winner in the men's soccer team's 3-2 win over Whitman College.

Chapman vs. Whitworth
This is the sixth meeting all-time between Chapman and the Pirates and the third in Spokane, where the Panthers are winless in two previous meetings. Chapman defeated Whitworth 16-14 for the first time last fall on a last-minute field goal at home. The Panthers last traveled to Whitworth in 2009 losing to the Pirates 23-8.

The Pirates are playing their first home game of the season after beginning the year with three road games - all victories. The 3-0 start is the Pirates' best since 2006 when the Bucs went 10-0 during the regular season. Whitworth currently ranks 24th in the nation in scoring, averaging 40.0 points per game and are led by senior WR Jake DeGooyer and his 135.7 receiving yards per game.

Chapman Football on Air
For the sixth-straight year, Chapman has partnered with the school's on-campus radio station, Chapman Radio, to broadcast eight of the nine Panthers' football games in 2012, including all four home games. The games will be streamed live on the internet at http://www.chapmanradio.com/sports. A rotation of on-air student talent will provide play-by-play and commentary for every down of Chapman football.

This is the first season that Chapman has partnered with Stretch Internet to offer live stats and streaming video for all of the team's home games. The video stream will be synced with the Chapman Radio broadcast to give fans video, audio and live stats in an all-in-one portal at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/chapman.portal#
