Dominant defensive effort earns Wadors SCIAC weekly honors

ORANGE, Calif. – Senior Ben Wadors earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors after leading the Chapman University football team to a dominant performance against La Verne and a 30-7 win. Wadors set career-highs with four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

The senior from San Jose, Calif., made six total tackles with four coming behind the line of scrimmage. His four tackles for loss set La Verne back 25 yards. As a team the Panthers were constantly making plays in the backfield with 14 tackles for loss, including eight sacks.

As a whole, the defensive unit for the Panthers severely limited a high-powered La Verne offense that entered the game ranked 21st in Division III in total offense. The Leopards averaged over 30 points and nearly 500 yards per game but were limited to just one early touchdown and 282 total yards.

Wadors pressure behind the line was felt even when he didn't make a tackle. He swatted down two passes and forced a fumble in the win.

With 5.5 sacks, Wadors now leads the SCIAC. His eight tackles for loss this year also rank fourth in the conference. He is one of just 16 players in all of Division III to record at least 3.5 sacks in a single game this season.

Chapman is on the road for the next two weeks and head to Cal Lutheran on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
