Football falls to Claremont in final road game

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University football team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 17-6 on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field. The Panthers (4-4 overall, 3-3 SCIAC) defense was led by junior Eddie Lee Favors who recorded 14 tackles, including six solo and one tackle for loss.   

Claremont-M-S (5-2 overall, 3-2 SCIAC) was on the board first with a 24-yard field goal by senior Mathew Aven to take a 3-0 lead. The Stags then drove 55 yards on 11 plays to take a 10-0 lead. Freshman Christian Curcio scored the touchdown with a one yard run to end the drive with 50 seconds left in the second quarter.

A 92-yard kick return from junior Jacob Isabel gave the Panthers prime field position. Chapman managed to put three points on the board to cut the deficit to 10-3 at the end of the first half with a 38-yard field goal by junior Lucas Alfonso.

Curcio recorded his second TD in the third quarter finishing off a nine-play drive for 76 yards to tack on another seven points with a five yard run to help the Stags to a 17-3 lead.

The Panthers marched down the field again, 67 yards on 10 plays to have Alfonso hit his second 30-yard field goal of the game and move the score to 17-6 with 3:25 left in the third quarter.

Senior DB Lorenzo Marks recorded an interception in the first quarter ending a 52-yard march by the Stags led by senior QB Trey Reynolds. Reynolds threw for 260 yards on the day and was 27-of-40.

Junior Ian Craddock rushed for a career-high 30 yards. Junior DB Chris Williams, sophomore DB Noah Doneen and sophomore DE Andrew Dieken were each credited with a pass break up.

Chapman will host Occidental College on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. at Wilson Field on Senior Day Saturday for the Panthers.
