Bokosky named Independents Coach of the Year

ORANGE, Calif. - Following a season in which the Chapman University men's basketball team won more games than any Panthers' squad in nearly 50 years, head coach Mike Bokosky was honored as the Association of Division III Independents Men's Basketball Coach of the Year last month. Despite four consecutive AD3I West Region postseason tournament championships, it's the first such honor for Bokosky.

Chapman posted a record of 24-3 a Division III school record for victories and the most for any Chapman team since 1959-60. In addition, sophomore F Justin Riley was named to the All-Independents first team, junior G Kyle Wood was named to the second team and teammates Griffin Ramme and Jared Kaiser earned honorable mention.

Riley had a breakout year for the Panthers, averaging 11.4 points and 8.1 rebounds. He shot 62.3 percent from the floor and led the team with 28 blocked shots and nine double-doubles.

The Panthers' leading scorer, Wood was named to the team for the second straight year, scoring 12.8 points per game. The junior scored 20 or more points in a game five times, made a career-high 50 three-pointers and led the team in assists.

Ramme finished right behind Riley with 11.3 points per game, including 37 three-pointers. The sophomore was one of three players to shoot over 42 percent from three-point range. Kaiser, a junior center, averaged 9.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

The All-Independent Men's Basketball teams were selected by the men's basketball coaches from AD3I member schools. For all three players, it is their first career selection to the All-Independent team.

The Association of Division III Independents consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2008-09. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.
