Winning streak snapped by La Sierra with 80-77 upset
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball saw its four-game winning streak halted with a 80-77 loss to visiting La Sierra University at Hutton Center on Saturday night. The defeat marked the first loss for the Panthers against La Sierra after 30 consecutive wins. Chapman also had its five-game home winning streak snapped by the upset.
With the Chapman (15-7) ahead 77-75, a decisive three-point shot from La Sierra junior Ben Shaw shifted the momentum to the Golden Eagles with 39 seconds left in the game and gave La Sierra its first lead since the 17:18 mark in the second half. Shaw sealed the deal with a jumper two seconds later to put the Eagles up by the winning margin 80-77.
The Panthers' control of the second half began to slip away when their six-point lead with 3:08 left diminished after La Sierra G Daveon Woods landed a shot for two of his 18 points in the game. The Golden Eagles followed with consecutive baskets from Shaw and G Miles Robbins to tie the game up at 75-75 with 1:50 left on the clock. Shaw (19) and Robbins (12) each finished with double-digit points.
Trailing by three in the last 20 seconds Chapman senior G Brandon Lin made two three-point attempts that missed followed by one by freshman G Jordan Young on the Panthers' final play.
The Chapman defense allowed 80 points for just the second time this season and first since Dec. 2 against Pomona-Pitzer.
After defeating La Sierra (11-17) by 13 points just three days earlier, the Panthers never led by more than eight on Saturday. Chapman was led by Lin and senior F Ben Ricard who each logged double-digit points with 20 and 19, respectively. Ricard added eight rebounds.
The Panthers continue their final homestand of the season Wednesday, Feb. 15 hosting Pacifica College during Chapman's Crossover Week.
