Young leads Chapman in final two non-conference games

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University men's basketball team ended a stretch of non-conference games with two wins during a two-day New Year's Eve tournament at the Hutton Sports Center. The Panthers defeated familiar opponent UC Santa Cruz 75-50 on Sunday evening before finishing their last non-conference game of the season with a 62-48 win over Colorado College.

Sophomore G Jordan Young finished the pair of games with a combined 30 points, four steals, seven rebounds, and six triples for the Panthers.

Game 1: Chapman 75, UC Santa Cruz 50

The Panthers faced off against the visiting Banana Slugs for the first time this season after defeating them two out of three meetings last season. Chapman didn't hesitate to show its presence with a 16-1 run in the first half that started with 18:11 on the clock. Defense was key in the Panthers' large lead as they held UC Santa Cruz (4-10) to just 31.8 percent shooting and out-rebounded them 21-7 in the first half. Chapman was able to head into intermission with a 37-16 lead and shooting 57.7 percent from field goal range.

The difference between the two teams remained the same most of the second half as the Panthers earned a 75-50 win over the regional opponents.

Three Panthers finished the game with above 15 points in Young (15), senior G Takeshi Clifford (16), and sophomore G Colin Zavrsnick (16). Zavrsnick collected three assists and two steals while Clifford came off the bench to add an additional two assists and shot 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.

Game 2: Chapman 62, Colorado College 48

In the Panthers' final non-conference game of the season, they received another strong performance from Young who finished with a game-high 15 points, six rebounds, an assist, and another game-high in three steals.

Although the game was close throughout the first half, Chapman (7-5) was able to gain a 32-24 advantage heading into intermission.

Colorado College (4-6) was unable to gain the lead again, however narrowed the score to 36-33 in the second half. The Panthers quickly responded with a 12-2 run over the visiting Tigers to secure a strong lead that they were able to hold the remainder of the game.

Clifford collected a game-high seven rebounds for the Panthers while also adding a team-high three assists. Sophomore F Justin Young added 14 points and two blocks.

The Panthers will take a three-game winning streak into conference play as the remainder of their season they will be against SCIAC opponents.
