Oregel, Zavrsnick earn SCIAC Players of the Week

ORANGE, Calif. – For the second time this school year, a Chapman University duo has swept the week's SCIAC Player of the Week awards as junior softball player Cassie Oregel and junior men's basketball player Colin Zavrsnick have been named Female and Male Players of the Week by the conference for the period from Jan. 27 – Feb. 2.

Oregel's dominating performance in her team's season debut against Whitworth on Saturday garnered attention all around the conference, leading to her first career Player of the Week recognition. The junior was nearly untouchable against the Pirates, coming within three outs of a perfect game. While an infield single thwarted a historic performance, Oregel managed to record a career-best game, shutting out the Pirates while allowing one hit and striking out 12.

As the men's basketball team fights for a postseason berth, Zavrsnick has led the offensive charge, averaging 24.4 points over the last five games en route to his first Player of the Week award. The junior continued his scoring streak by tallying his second and third straight 20+ point games in two conference contests on the week. He combined for 49 points on 55 percent shooting from the field (17-of-31), including a 29-point performance on Saturday against Redlands. The offensive outburst against the Bulldogs, which fell two points shy of a career-high for Zavrsnick, came by way of a season-best five three-point buckets.

The Chapman duo's sweep comes just five weeks after Kimi Takaoka and Taylor Hamasaki accomplished the feat. In their second eligible year as a member of the SCIAC, the Panthers have already tallied nine Player of the Week honors, surpassing last year's total of seven.
