Joyce's big weekend garners weekly SCIAC honors

ORANGE, Calif. - Chapman University men's basketball player John Joyce has been named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week for the period of Feb. 24-March 2. He becomes the third Panther hoopster to earn the award this season, joining juniors Taylor Hamasaki (twice) and Colin Zavrsnick.

Joyce played a big role in Chapman's first-ever SCIAC Postseason Tournament championship over the weekend as the Panthers defeated Pomona-Pitzer (on the road) and Cal Lutheran (at home) to advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The junior center scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the semifinals against the Sagehens on Friday night and then added 17 points and nine rebounds in the final against Cal Lutheran on Saturday. In the two games, Joyce missed only one shot, going 8-for-9 and 6-for-6 from the field, respectively.

It is the 10th such award for a Chapman student-athlete during the 2013-14 academic year.
