Another milestone night for Chapman as Zavrsnick hits 1,000

ORANGE, Calif. – For the second straight game, a Chapman University men's basketball player reached the career milestone of 1,000 points and the Panthers defeated visiting La Sierra University 89-72 at the Hutton Sports Center on Saturday night. Senior G Colin Zavrsnick led all scorers with 26 points, including reaching four digits with back-to-back three-pointers with 3:10 left in the second half.

Zavrsnick followed right behind teammate and senior G Taylor Hamasaki who hit the milestone on Dec. 5 against Bristol University. Hamasaki, who also scored 22 and added seven rebounds and four assists on Saturday, assisted on Zavrsnick's milestone basket.

Chapman (6-0) won its 11th consecutive regular season game dating back to last year and improved to 3-0 at the Hutton Center this season. The win was also No. 399 in the coaching career of Panthers' head coach Mike Bokosky, who will have his first opportunity to reach the 400-win plateau at La Sierra on Dec. 22.

The Panthers never trailed after the first minute of the game and built a double-digit lead midway through the first period, but the Eagles cut it to four points at 28-24 with 5:29 remaining. That was the closest La Sierra (0-7) would get in the game as Chapman pushed its lead back to 10 at halftime, 43-33

With just under 10 minutes to go in the game, Chapman started an 11-0 run to turn a seven-point lead into an 18-point advantage with 7:35 remaining. Later, Zavrsnick would score consecutive three's to maintain that 18-point lead. The senior capped the night with a pair of free throws to give him 26, including six three-pointers.

Three of Chapman's starters reached double figures in points, including senior C John Joyce (13 points, four rebounds) to go with PG Garrett James (eight points, nine assists, four steals).

La Sierra was led by Andre Marquez and Robert Looper, each with 17 points.
