D3 Week Student-Athlete Profile: Garrett James, Basketball

Garrett James – Senior
Men's Basketball
3.40 GPA, Business Administration (Real Estate emphasis)
All-SCIAC Ted Ducey Award winner

The family ties run deep in the James family, and it's obvious. One of the reasons Garrett chose Chapman was for the opportunity to play for his uncle. And not only does Garrett always have the largest cheering section in the Hutton Center on game nights (filled with aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.), but he plans to pursue his career in the family business. Family and camaraderie was a big reason why Garrett earned the SCIAC's Ducey Award for character and leadership this postseason.

Here's our Q&A with Garrett:

Why did you choose to come to Chapman and be an athlete?
After deciding I was going to transfer from Concordia University (Irvine), I thought it would be great to stay local in Orange County and it was a great opportunity to play for my uncle (Head Coach Mike Bokosky).

What do you like most about the balance in Division III between academics and athletics?
The balance between academics and athletics has turned me into a better-rounded student-athlete. Academics is just as important and athletics and juggling both gave me the responsibility to succeed at high levels in both.

What unique opportunities has Chapman provided for you in your studies?
Chapman has provided me with a prestigious education. I feel that the Real Estate emphasis is supplying me with the knowledge and tools I need to be successful in my career path.

What do you hope to do after graduation?
I plan to work for my family real estate company (James Real Estate), while continuing to grow my youth skills development basketball program (Ironmen Basketball).
