White tallies third double-double in four games

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team fell to the visiting George Fox Bruins 78-68 earlier this evening behind a double-double effort from sophomore Chandler White. This was White's third double-double in the last four games for the Panthers.

White came out strong in the first half, scoring 10 of his 16 points and snagging seven of his 10 boards to help the Panthers outscore George Fox 33-31.

The Bruins scored the first points of the game on the opening play on a layup from senior Dylan Hamlett. White tied the game on the next possession with a layup of his own. George Fox drove for another layup but White responded again to tie the score. Sophomore Jackson Januik drained a three, but junior Cam Haslam answered with his only three pointer on the night to tie the game once again.

The Panthers then went on a 7-0 run with the help from a converted and-one from Haslam to go up 14-9 with 14 minutes left to play in the first. A couple of layups and a jump shot from the Bruins helped them regain the lead. Sophomore Kevin Marlow responded, draining a jumper to give Chapman a 16-15 lead with just under 12 minutes to play.

Five lead changes later, the Bruins led 27-24 with just under five minutes to play in the first half. A couple of layups from Haslam and senior Reed Nakakihara helped inch the Panthers back within one point with a minute and a half left. Chapman took back the lead heading into the second half behind a White layup and a made free throw from junior Colin Ferrier.

George Fox tied the game just 18 seconds into the second half, but Nakakihara drained a shot from behind the arc to help give Chapman a three-point lead. The Bruins then went on a 10-2 run with the help of two three pointers to take their final lead at 43-38. A couple of made free throws from senior Jeff Kenney brought the Panthers back within three, but a couple of converted and-ones gave George Fox a nine-point lead with 15 minutes left to play in the game.

A couple of layups and a three pointer put the Bruins up by 16 points with just over four minutes left to play. Kenney hit a couple of free throws, followed by Haslam and Ferrier layups to bring Chapman back within 10 points with two minutes left to play. The two sides traded points for the next minute, but George Fox ran out the clock to take the 10-point victory.

Haslam tallied his seventh double-digit scoring game of the season – out of eight games. The junior also added three boards and four assists in the effort. Marlow scored nine points in 17 minutes off the bench for the Panthers, adding six rebounds and three blocks on the night.

The Panthers return to Hutton Sports Center tomorrow night at 6pm as they host SUNY Oneonta in a non-conference game.
