Men's basketball drops SCIAC game to Caltech

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team fell 63-51 to visiting Caltech on Wednesday. Sophomore Chandler White led the Panthers with 14 points.

The Panthers (7-9, 3-4 SCIAC) fell into a 12-2 hole after the opening tip and never fully recovered. The Panthers first four points came on free throws until junior Colin Ferrier dropped in a layup as he was fouled and drained the free throw to make it 12-7.

A put back from Daniel Foldes put the Panthers down just two points with 10:08 to go in the half but Caltech scored the next eight points over a three-minute span to put the Beavers back up by double digits at 24-14. Marcus Gee scored 23 points to lead Caltech and knocked down four three pointers. Caltech shot drained nine three-pointers in the game, shooting 42.7 percent beyond the three-point arc but just 35 percent inside the arc.

Chapman shot just 32.8 percent in the game and was 4-of-20 from three-point range. The Panthers cut the lead to as little as seven in the second half but Caltech continued to respond as it came away with the 12-point win.

Ferrier had 12 rebounds to go along with seven points and three assists while sophomore Kevin Marlow scored 12 points off the bench.

The Panthers are back at home on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The women's game will tip off at 2 p.m. and the men's game will follow at 4 p.m.
