Seniors seize spotlight in 89-53 Senior Night win

ORANGE, Calif. – A starting lineup of five seniors set the tone early as the Chapman University men's basketball team cruised to an 89-53 victory over La Verne on Senior Day. Senior Corwin Feerick celebrated his final home game with a double-double while fellow senior Josh Mendoza poured in 17 points.

Six seniors were celebrated prior to their final home game of the year. The five healthy seniors were put in the starting five and went on an 18-0 run to start the game. The Leopards never came closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the Panthers fired on all cylinders.

Feerick had only attempted two three-pointers – and missed both – until his Senior Night. Feerick was 3-for-4 beyond the three-point arc, draining his first two attempts. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and had six blocks in the rout. Mendoza knocked down five three-pointers to fuel his 17-point effort. Senior Reed Nakakihara hit four threes and finished with 14 points on the night.

Junior Cam Haslam, who will graduate this spring, scored 16 points to go along with his five rebounds and six assists. Senior Jeff Kenney scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and distributed four assists.

After the 18-0 run, the Leopards pulled within 10 points at 28-18. La Verne did not make a field goal over the final 4:35 and Chapman scored the next nine points to put the game out of reach for good. La Verne shot just 28.6 percent on the night while Chapman shot 52.4 percent and knocked down 14 three-pointers.

The Panthers wrap up their season on Tuesday with a trip to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for a 7 p.m. game.
