Men’s basketball falls to La Verne

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team fell 68-60 to the visiting La Verne Leopards (1-13, 1-5 SCIAC) earlier this afternoon. Senior Colin Ferrier led the Panthers (11-4, 3-3 SCIAC) with 13 points in the effort.

Chapman jumped out to a 6-0 start before the Leopards got on the board with a free throw at the 16:48 mark. Junior Chandler White and sophomore Hayden Moore extended the lead with a couple of made baskets, but back-to-back three pointers from La Verne cut the Panthers' lead to just one point.

The Leopards took their first lead of the game when sophomore Isaiah Knox drained their third consecutive three pointer. Sophomore Daniel Foldes tied the game at 12-12 before fellow classmate Alex Rogat regained the lead for the Panthers. La Verne took the lead again with just under seven minutes left to play in the first half, but freshman Sam Barela nailed a couple of free throws to swing the score back in favor of Chapman. The two teams exchanged leads five more times before the Leopards took a 27-25 lead at the half.

Chapman pulled back to tie the game twice in the second half but were never able to take a lead. La Verne came out strong in the second half, scoring seven points in a row to take a nine-point lead. Barela hit a layup, followed by a three-pointer from Moore to give five fast points back to the Panthers. After trading points, Moore hit his second three-pointer of the game to pull Chapman within two points with 12:30 left on the clock.

The game saw its final tie with just under six minutes left to play before the Leopards regained the lead for good. Leopards' sophomore Sinai Enoch ended the game with three free throws to seal their first victory of the 2019-20 season.

Foldes and Barela each tallied 10 points while White was just behind Ferrier with 12 points. White led the Panthers with six rebounds while Barela and Ferrier each tallied two assists. The Leopards scored nearly half their points from three-point range, shooting 10-of-19 from beyond the arc. Moore scored both of Chapman's only two three-pointers as the Panthers shot just 2-of-11 from range.

Chapman returns to Hutton Sport Center on Wednesday, Jan. 22 to host Redlands in the second game of its three-game home stand.
