Men’s basketball falls to Caltech 75-57

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team struggled to stay afloat and fell to the visiting Caltech Beavers (6-11, 4-4 SCIAC) 75-57 earlier this afternoon.

It was a close battle until the Beavers began to pull ahead with seconds left in the first half. Caltech sophomore Stephen Hei scored 14 off the bench tying Marcus Gee with four three-pointers apiece. Junior Spencer Schneider led the Beavers in scoring and put up 19 points.

Junior Chandler White and sophomore Alex Rogat led the Panthers (12-5, 4-4 SCIAC) in scoring, putting up 13 points each. Sophomore Hayden Moore contributed with three three-pointers despite the Panthers shooting 38.5 percent from three-point range.

The game was tied 26-26 with 14 seconds left in the first half until Hei shot a lead-securing bucket for the Beavers with only three seconds on the clock, giving Caltech a 29-26 lead heading into haltime.

The Beavers began their run that would secure their victory over the Panthers with a freshman Pavlos Stavrinides layup with 16 minutes left in the second half. The Beavers went on to score six unanswered points, taking a seven-point lead with 13 and a half minutes left to play.

Marcus Gee and Noah Barnes hit back-to-back three-pointers just over two minutes later to give Caltech a hefty 15-point lead. Gee then scored five points in a row, followed by another layup from the Beavers to take a 54-33 lead with 8:12 on the clock.

Moore sunk a shot from beyond the three-point arc to pull the Panthers back within 13 points with six minutes left, but it was all Caltech action from there. Barnes sealed the deal for the Beavers with another three-pointer with 1:49 on the clock followed by a layup from Schneider, securing the 75-57 victory for the visiting Beavers.

The Panthers are on the road for their next two games but return to Hutton Sports Center on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. to host Cal Lutheran.
