Men's basketball ends 2019-20 season with loss to CMS

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's basketball team wrapped up its season with a 73-63 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Panthers celebrated to graduating players – Colin Ferrier and Chandler White – prior to the game.

White led the Panthers with 24 points in the final game of the season to go along with six rebounds. Junior Hayden Moore finished his first season with the Panthers with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting with all his shots coming from behind the three-point arc. Moore also hit all three free throw attempts, finishing the season 43-for-44 at the free throw line.

The Panthers fell behind early but both teams traded small runs to keep the deficit in single digits for the entire first half. Trailing by six with 14 minutes to go, White and Moore fueled a 9-3 run that saw the Panthers tie up the game at 52-52. All four baskets in the two-and-a-half minute run came from three-point range.

After a go-ahead attempt rimmed out for Moore, the Stags reclaimed the lead. Moore put up another attempt on the next trip down the floor but drained it for a 55-54 Chapman lead. A defensive stop led to a layup for junior Thomas Doyle on the other end as the lead increased to four.

After claiming the lead, the Panthers shooting went cold as they were held scoreless for nearly the next six minutes. CMS took full advantage with a 13-0 run to push the lead into double digits for the first time with under four minutes left.

The Panthers were able to cut the lead down to six but CMS scored a few late buckets for the final margin. The Stags shot 45.5 percent for the night while Chapman shot just over 35 percent.

Doyle stepped into a starting role in the final two games of the season and scored nine points against CMS to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Ferrier was injured in the Caltech game on Saturday but stepped onto the court one last time for the tipoff of his senior game. He was subbed out after the first five seconds.

The Panthers season came to a close as the finished 15-10 overall and 7-9 in the SCIAC.
