Men's basketball comes up just short in Texas

BELTON, Texas – A second half surge saw the Chapman University men's basketball team take a late lead but the upset bid came up short as the Panthers fell 88-81 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship against No. 6 Mary Hardin-Baylor. Senior Jack Roggin scored a career-best 34 points to lead the Panthers.

Roggin's career scoring night was fueled by seven three-pointers and a 13-for-21 shooting night. He scored 23 of his 34 points in the second half to lead Chapman. Anthony Giomi poured in13 of his 18 points in the second half as well to lead the Panthers to a 20-point turnaround.

Chapman was down 10 points at halftime but chipped away over the first 11 minutes of the second half. Giomi tied the game at 60-60 with 10:18 to go but the Cru answered and led 67-63 with just over nine minutes left.

A three-pointer from Roggin and a pair of free throws from Hayden Moore gave Chapman its first lead of the night at 68-67. Roggin knocked down three of his three-pointers over a three-minute span and scored Chapman's next 12 points as the Panthers completed a 17-2 run to go up 80-69 with 4:31 left.

The Cru responded with a full court pressure that forced three Panther turnovers. UMHB scored the next 12 points of the game in less than three minutes to reclaim the lead. A free throw from Giomi momentarily tied the game bu Luke Feely but the Cru back on top and Carson Hammond knocked a deep three-pointer with 16 seconds left to go up 86-81.

UMHB finished the game on a 19-1 run over the final four-plus minutes to hold off the upset bid.

Moore finished the game with 17 points, including five three-pointers on 50 percent shooting from behind the arc. He also had five rebounds and six assists. Roggin contributed six rebounds and five assists. Anthony Smith had eight points to go along with seven boards.

Hammond led four UMHB starters in double figures with 23 points. Ty Price had 16 points and 10 assists.

Moore finished the season one three-pointer shy of tying the single season record at Chapman that he set in 2019-20. He finishes his career with 183 made three-pointers on 43.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. He ranks fourth all-time for three-pointers made in just 52 games and third in three-point shooting percentage.

Chapman's season comes to a close with the loss with a record of 22-5.
