Wise finishes two back of the leaders at the West Cup

LA VERNE, Calif. – Junior Bryan Wise finished just two strokes behind the medalists to lead the Chapman University men's golf team at the West Cup. The Panthers placed ninth out of 14 teams in the three round event on Monday and Tuesday.

Wise moved up seven spots on the final day of the tournament after shooting an even par 70 in Tuesday's final round to take fifth overall. However, he was just two shots off the four leaders who tied for medalist honors. Wise ended the three-round tournament with a combined score of 220 (+10) while the leaders each fired a 218. The Panthers' standout junior also led the entire tournament field in par three scoring, finishing one over par on the par threes, and ranked second with nine birdies.

The tournament was played over two days with 36 holes on Monday and the final round of 18 holes played on Tuesday. Wise was the Panthers leader during all three rounds with a 74-76-70. Wise's final round made him one of five golfers in the tournament to card a single round score of 70 or better.

As a team, Chapman began the tournament with its best round. The group fired a 304 (+24) on day one and was sitting in sixth place as a team. After a 311 (+27) in the second round, the Panthers finished up with a 316 (+32) on Tuesday as the team dropped to a ninth-place finish.

Senior Nickolas Gates was next on the leaderboard for Chapman. He finished in 34th after accumulating a 234 (+24) for the tournament. Freshman Dallas Haun started the tournament with a 7-over par 77 in the first round and placed 53rd after finishing the West Cup with a 240 (+30). Fellow freshman Griffin Tso took 60th and junior Chuck Pedone finished 70th overall.

The Panthers have just two more events before the SCIAC Championships. Chapman host SCIAC #2 on April 9-10 at Anaheim Hills as well as a Tri-Match with Whittier and Cal Lutheran at Tustin Ranch on April 13.
