Men’s golf enters SCIAC Championships tied for fifth
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University men's golf team heads to the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, Calif. this weekend to compete in the SCIAC Championships. The three-day tournament begins on Thursday, April 18 and runs until Saturday, April 20.
The men enter the final tournament of the 2018-19 season tied for fifth place overall with Cal Lutheran. The Panthers will look to overtake the Regals and improve on their sixth-place finish in the 2018 SCIAC Championships.
Senior Griffin Tso will lead Chapman in this year's finals after finishing tied for 12th place overall in the second SCIAC Dual match. The veteran finished the match with a season-high score of 153 (+8). Tso averages 76.3 strokes per round heading into his final tournament.
Returning to the championships in his sophomore season is former All-SCIAC Second Teamer Avery Keating. Keating helped the Panthers to a fifth place finish in the first SCIAC meet with a score of 149 (+5) and a 16th-place finish. He shot a team and season-low one-under par in the second round of the match and averages a team-high 75.7 strokes per round.
Sophomore Brody Hval looks to improve on his 28th-place finish in last year's championships. He is averaging 76.5 strokes per round with his best tournament of the season coming at the first SCIAC meet. Hval shot a one-over 73 in the first round, followed by a 78 (+5) in the second round to finish tied for 23rd place.
Junior Ricky Hoefert enters his second SCIAC Championships after shooting a season-best 156 (+12) at the second SCIAC match just last weekend. Hoefert is averaging 76.8 strokes per round, solidifying his spot in the championships.
Junior Sian Rogers returns to the championships averaging 82.8 strokes per round. He scored a season-best 77 (+5) at the tri-match against Cal Lutheran and Vanguard in March and scored a 168 (+26) in the second SCIAC meet last weekend.
Competing in his first SCIAC Championship is senior Zach Gellens. Gellens has only competed in one meet his season, scoring a 157 (+13) at the first SCIAC meet.
The first group tees off at Brookside Golf Course at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning and play will continue through Saturday. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for senior and military.
