Keating finishes under par at CA State Invitational

VENTURA, Calif. – The Chapman University men's golf team finished tied for fifth place in its opening tournament of the 2019 season. Junior Avery Keating led the pack at the California State Intercollegiate, tying for sixth place overall with a final score of 143 (-1).

Keating was even through the first round of competition but improved on day two by a stroke to finish in the top-10 and under par.

Freshman Will Ellegard finished just two strokes back from Keating, finishing tied for ninth place overall in his first collegiate tournament. The rookie finished even along with Keating after the first round but added two strokes to shoot a 73 (+1) in the second round to finish with a total score of 144 (+1).

Senior Ricky Hoefert and junior Brody Hval rounded out the scoring on the men's side. Hoefert shot a 78 (+6) in round one and shaved six strokes off his score in the second round to finish day two even. After the six-shot improvement, the veteran finished tied for 30th place overall with a final score of 150 (+6).

Hval finished just one stroke back from Hoefert. He shot a 76 (+4) in the first round and a 75 (+3) in the second round to tie for 34th place overall with a total score of 151 (+7).

Senior Brent Bjordnahl finished the first meet of the season with a total score of 159 (+15). He shot an 85 (+13) in the first round but drastically improved in the second round, shaving off 11 strokes to shoot a 74 (+2) on the second day of competition.

The Panthers take the next two weeks off before heading to the OUAZ Fall Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz. on Monday, Sept. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 1 for the final tournament of the fall season.
