Men's golf atop leaderboard after first round

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – After the first round of the SCIAC Championship, the Chapman University men's golf team sits in a tie atop of the leaderboard. The Panthers are tied with Redlands after both teams shot a 13-over 301.

Chapman and Redlands lead Cal Lutheran by six strokes heading into the middle round of the three-round tournament. Senior Brody Hval led the charge for Chapman with a two-over 74. He birdied three holes on the day and is in fourth place but just one stroke off the lead.

Freshman Charlie Shumway is just one stroke behind Hval in a tie for fifth. Seniors Jack Clendening and Joaquin Cortes both turned in their best rounds of the year at four-over par and are tied for seventh.

The Panthers return to the course tomorrow for round two.
