Men's golf wins SCIAC Golf Tournament Championship

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – Trailing by six stokes going into the final round, the Chapman University men's golf team turned in its best round to become the 2021 SCIAC Golf Tournament Champions at the Los Serranos Country Club on Tuesday. The team win is the first tournament win for the Panthers this year.

When the day began, Redlands led the three-team field by six strokes. Four Chapman golfers finished their rounds under 78 strokes to overcome the Bulldogs lead and claim the 2021 SCIAC Golf Tournament Championship.

Senior Brody Hval finished off the championship for the Panthers with a birdie on the 18th hole. He finished in second place and just a stroke behind the tournament medalist. Hval matched his round one score with a two-over 74 in the third  round. He finished the tournament with a nine-over 225.

Senior Jack Clendening was just a stroke behind Hval in third. He finished the tournament 10-over par after playing his best round in the final round. After bogeys on the second and fifth holes, Clendening parred 11 consecutive holes before a birdie on the 17th and finishing with another par. His one-over 73 tied for the best round of the day and of the tournament.

Freshman Charlie Shumway was just one more stroke back in a tied for fourth. His 227 (+11) for tournament gave Chapman their third golfer in the top-5 on the leaderboard. He equaled his first round with a three-over 75. Freshman Logan Kenly had his best round of the tournament to finish in 10th individually. He shot a 77 (+5) to finish with a 234 (+18) for the tournament.

Senior Joaquin Cortes finished 14th while sophomore Joseph Cenni and freshman Ian Engstrom tied for 15th.
