Chapman men victorious in stadium debut

ORANGE, Calif. -  Perhaps inspired by the new athletics complex it was playing in for the first time, or the promise of a new season beginning, the Chapman University men's soccer team defeated visiting University of Puget Sound 1-0 in the season debut for both teams.

The Panthers, playing in the first-ever athletic event in the new Ernie Chapman Stadium, received a goal by freshman D Cody Mansfield in the 41st minute and held on for the shutout in the second half.

It was a defensive battle for both teams which combined for just 11 total shots. Chapman's (1-0) goalkeepers, sophomores Tyler Hadzinsky and Jimmy Adranly each played 45 minutes and combined to shutout the Loggers with Adranly making one save. Puget Sound (0-1) was shutout just once all of last season on the way to a 15-3-1 overall record in 2007.

The season opening victory is Chapman's first since 2004. The Panthers have won two of their last three home openers on Wilson Field.
