Hadzinsky, Shah headline All-Independent Selections

ORANGE, Calif. - Chapman University sophomore GK Tyler Hadzinsky was named Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) men's soccer Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2008 season and earned All-Independents first team honors on Friday. Junior M Jeff Shah was also named to the first team along with three other Panthers teammates honored.

Juniors Dean Sewitz and Matt O'Leary were named to the second team and sophomore Dalton Sweaney was selected as honorable mention.

Hadzinsky helped the Panthers set a school record in 2008 with a 0.59 goals-against average in 18 games. The sophomore allowed just eight goals in 15 games and completed four shutouts. Hadzinsky, who was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team last month, finished with a 0.62 GAA - the lowest mark by a Chapman goalkeeper since 1983 - and made 49 saves.

Meanwhile, Shah scored three goals and added four assists from the midfield. The team captain ranked third on the team in total points with 10 and scored a pair of game-winning goals. It's the second year in a row Shah has earned the award.

Sewitz was named to the second team, tying for the team lead with six goals and leading the team with three game-winning goals. The forward was second on the team with 14 points. O'Leary, a defender, is also a two-time recipient of the All-Independent award, contributing to the record-setting defense in 16 starts.

Chapman's leader in goals (6-tie), assists (5) and total points (17), Sweaney, earned honorable mention. The Panthers finished the season with their best overall record since 1999 with a 12-4-2 mark.

The AD3I consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2008-09. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.
