Home opener success continues for men's soccer

ORANGE, Calif. – A pair of goals from senior M Dalton Sweaney gave the Chapman University men's soccer a victory in the team's 2010 home opener, a 2-1 win over visiting University of La Verne at Wilson Field on Monday night. The Panthers improved to 4-1 in their past five home openers, including three straight wins.

Sweaney picked up a loose ball and fired a left-footed, high-arching shot over the Leopards' GK Jonathyn Lomeli from about 20 yards away for the game-winner. The goal – his fourth of the season – came in the 59th minute of play. Sweaney had already given Chapman a 1-0 lead in the first half, beating Lomeli with a shot to the lower-right corner.

The senior midfielder has scored four goals in four games to begin the season and four of Chapman's five goals as a team. Sweaney scored three goals for the Panthers in 2009.

La Verne (0-2-1) ended Chapman's bid for a shutout with a penalty kick goal in the 57th minute. The Leopards were awarded the PK after Panthers senior GK Tyler Hadzinsky was called for a foul in the goalie box.  La Verne D Angel De Alba scored the goal to tie the game at 1-1. The tie was short-lived as Chapman (2-2) regained the lead just two minutes later.

Hadzinsky was otherwise solid in goal, making a pair of saves in his first full 90-minute effort of the season.
